The shops of the former Yue Man Square have been reopened in Yue Man Lane, the new landmark in Kwun Tong, one after another since May this year. One of the shops, “Tsun Fook Hin” jade shop, was flocked with a jubilant crowd on the opening. There were seven to eight flower baskets placed across the over 100-square-foot shop, and there was also some expensive champagne sent by a loyal customer. The owner, Mrs. Yeung, was busy greeting guests, and the shop was overwhelmed with a lot of customers.
If you ask the guests there what makes them so happy, they would simply tell you it’s because the reopening of the shop is like a reunion after a long absence. Mrs. Yeung, aged 68, has become popular in Kwun Tong for many years. She has been working in the jewelry industry for more than four decades. No matter she was a top salesman or a store owner, she always treats her customers as one wants to be treated. Therefore, she has seamless networking with friends and loyal customers.
Mrs. Yeung is a people person, and her relationship with her loyal customers is not only confined to the store. They would always go for a meal together, and sometimes she would act as a mediator in customers’ family matters too. It’s hard to imagine that in a certain time and place, there was an Anita who was once a top salesman in the jewelry industry, and that Anita was actually Mrs. Yeung.
She started her jewelry career in 1975. She taught herself four languages and worked in a number of jewelry stores, and then she became a manager in just four years. Her career path advances skyrocket with prosperous earning in the 80s, and the highest tax payment she ever paid was up to $56,000. Her hard-working had made herself the top salesman among the industry. “I got up early in the morning every day, and planned my whole day schedule while brushing my teeth. Then I took a cab back home at night. I was so tired and had to take off my high-heel shoes immediately once I got home. It was like coming back from a battle every day. I could work very hard at that time because I was still young. There were two companies which really appreciated my personality, and invited me to work for them.”
Positioned atop the golden years, Anita didn’t want to fight on the battlefield anymore. She wanted to be in charge of her own business, even if she had to start from scratch. In 2000, she decided to open a jade store in Yue Man Square. She was introduced by a friend to rent a 40-square-foot shop and started her own business. “There were a lot of potential customers in this area. But the rent in the same area of Kwun Tong was daunting at that time. The monthly rate of a 120-square-foot shop could be up to $60,000. Compared to those shops, mine was small. But I didn’t need to hire staff, as I could do everything by myself. Therefore, the 40-square-foot shop was enough for me.” The shop was small, but the business was big. Mrs. Yeung often had to handle more than ten thousand dollars per deal. As she did not install the card machine system at that time, customers had to bring a large stack of cash to buy the jewelry. She had received over $100,000 cash for once.
It is always pleasant for the passer-by to see a woman with a smile on her face in the jade shop, a smile that comes from the heart. Mrs. Yeung treats every customer as a friend. “We talk about everything, and sometimes they even tell me about their family matters.” Her conscientiousness to business is another key to success. “I don’t just simply do business, sometimes I would step into their shoes for thinking. Every customer is looking for value-for-money products. Hence, I would set the price to be more competitive among the markets. Now the shop has reopened in Yue Man Lane, Mrs. Yeung is happy to meet her loyal customers again. “They treat me real good, and I am very satisfied by that. Now I don’t expect to get rich from the business anymore. I am already pleased that my shop can be transformed from 40 square feet to 120 square feet. I have spent a lot of effort to renovate the shop, and hope it can bring a comfortable atmosphere to customers as well as to me.”
